OCA SACRAMENTO ACHIEVEMENTS

 

Two Yeas in a row - OCA GREATER SACRAMENTO CHAPTER  was awarded CHAPTER OF THE YEAR in 2008.

Founded in 1995, OCA-GSC celebrates ten years of advocacy and leadership in the Asian Pacific Americans (APA) community. Currently OCA-GSC has a 21-member board with increased interest from the community to serve on the Board. The organization is reporting a 20% membership growth since January 2005.

National Organization

OCA-GSC is the only Sacramento APA organization with a national office headquartered in Washington, D.C.

OCA Northern California Regional Chapters Council

OCA-GSC along with the four Bay Area Chapters, including East Bay, San Francisco Bay, San Mateo and Silicon Valley have formed the Northern California Regional Chapters Council. We are the pilot model for the formation of OCA Regional Councils, and many OCA Chapters wishing to do the same will be looking to us for guidance and direction.

Advocacy

  • The Sacramento Bee quoted OCA-GSC President Linda Ng during an interview regarding Captain James Yee.
  • OCA-GSC hosted a Community Hate Crimes Forum since 2005.
  • OCA-GSC supported and campaigned for Assemblymember Mike Eng's Hate Crimes Bill AJR 29.
  • OCA-GSC supported Assemblymember Mike Eng and Assemblymember Todd Spitzer's joint support in proclaiming June as the month to memorialize all victims of hate crimes.
  • OCA-GSC hosted a Hate Crimes Education Workshop sponsored by Allstate Insurance.
  • OCA-GSC supported and campaigned for Assemblymember Judy Chu’s AB2428 on hate crimes.
  • OCA-GSC opposed the Governor’s plan to abolish the CA Commissions on Asian Pacific Islander American Affairs.
  • OCA-GSC stands against the Racist Tsunami Song Parody by Hot-97.

Civic Participation

  • OCA-GSC hosted the 2007 OCA National Convention participated by many State Legislators, community organizations and OCA members across the nations.
  • OCA Co-Sponsored the API Legislative Day at the Capitol.
  • OCA–GSC actively promotes voter registration at CNYCA and Pacific Rim Street Fest.
  • OCA-GSC sponsors voter’s registration drive.
  • OCA-GSC hosts the Reception at the Capitol Event.
  • OCA-GSC co-hosts API Candidates & Voter Education Forum.
  • OCA-GSC supported the California API Legislative Caucus “API Policy Summit”.

Education

  • OCA-GSC awarded many students who won in an essay contest titlint "Why is it important for me, as an Asian Pacific Islander American, to vote?" in the Dragon Boat Festival in May 2008.
  • OCA-GSC awarded many students who won in an essay contest titling "Light the Torch for the Next Generation" during the OCA Nationa in June 2007.
  • OCA-GSC awarded one Internship at the national level in Washington D.C. in 2007.
  • OCA-GSC awarded one Internship at the national level in Washington D.C. in 2006.
  • OCA-GSC awarded one Internship at the national level in Washington D.C. in 2005.
  • OCA-GSC awarded six Scholarships to deserving APA students in 2004.
  • OCA Summer Internship Program provides an opportunity to gain experience as an intern on the national level in DC.
  • OCA National scholarship programs: OCA/ AVON Scholarship, OCA/ UPS Gold Mountain Scholarship, OCA/ Verizon Scholarship, Gates Millennium Scholars Program.

Community Outreach and Special Projects

  • Chinese New Year Senior Luncheon, honoring the APA community seniors.
  • OCA-GSC sits on the Locke Community Advisory Committee. Locke is one of the few rural Chinese communities that has survived and, further represents a significant culture and historic site that needs to be preserved.
  • OCA-GSC co-sponsored special screening with KVIE, Channel 6: Bill Moyer’s “Becoming an American: The Chinese Experience” in 2004 and “Searching for Asian America” in 2003.

Economic Development

  • OCA-GSC created a new Vice President position on the Board of Director: VP of Economic Development.
  • New board members from the business sectors have proposed sponsoring seminars/workshops for the APA community that will focus on economic and business issues.

Community Leadership

  • OCA-GSC is well respected in the community.
  • API Legislative Caucus endorsed OCA-GSC President Linda Ng for a position to the Fair Employment and Housing Commission.
  • The International Association for Woman of Color Day has selected OCA-GSC President Linda Ng as an honoree for 2005.

Coalitions and Alliances

OCA-GSC advocates building and strengthen partnerships and coalitions with other APA and community organizations that share OCA’s mission: AACRE, ABAS, APAPA, APSEA, APOA, CACS, CAIR, CAPITAL, CNYCA, JACL, RMHC Scholarship Foundation, Asian Resources, Indus Valley Chamber of Commerce, Sacramento Chinese Community Service Center, the Hmong community, the Tongan Community, and many others.
